Abstract
ABSTRACT Nur Amala, Alfia. 2019. "The Use of Song Lyrics to Improve Student’s Motivation in Learning English“. (An Action Research at the 11th Grade student of SMK Muhammadiyah 5 Kalitudu in the Academic Year of 2018/2019) of Skripsi, for Degree of Sarjana in English Language Education. Faculty of Languages and Arts Education IKIP PGRI Bojonegoro. Advisor I: Ima Isnaini Taufiqur R. M.Pd, Advisor II: Oktha Ika Rahmawati M.Pd. Keywords: Song Lyrics, Motivation, Classroom Action Research. Song lyrics is one of the teaching media that can be used to teach several material or skill in learning English. It suggested by (Baker, 2013) he stated that “one of most important lyrics have four major language acquisition skills that are targeted include grammar, vocabulary, pronounciation and listening, however learning a language to a high degree requires communicative competence as well”. Related to that, it is necessary to discuss the song lyrics in depth so that teachers can recognize the many advantages of using song lyrics as an intructional media. This research was aimed to know whether the song lyrics can improve student’s motivation in learning English and to know how apply the song lyrics to improve student’s motivation in learning English at eleventh grade of SMK Muhammadiyah 5 Kalitidu. The method used in this study was collaborative action research (CAR). Actions observational procedure consists of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Action performing is performed in two cycles, each cycle consists of two meetings. The subjects were eleventh students grade of SMK Muhammadiyah 5 Kalitidu with total 16 students. Data collection techniques using classroom observation and questionnaire. The data from classroom observation were obtained from student’s checklist during the teaching program. The data analysis were presented in a form of descriptive explanation, and then the data collected from questionnaire was multiple choice by using the questionnaire sheet, represented in table, then described the phenomenon found. Based on the result of data analysis showed from pre-questionnaire: questionnaireI and questionnaire II. Morever in the pre-questionnaire, there were 37,5%, which means that they are still too low in undesrtand to learning English. After implementing action research in the Cycle I, they have little improved presence than ever before. The precentage shown was slightly higher than before at 41,7%. Therefore, it was continuing in the Cycle II. In this Cycle II, The students get a lot of motivation improvement in learnning English and also look more confident in expressing opinions when learning in groups. It showed a high improvement of 73,2% with criteria “good”. It can be concluded that using Song lyrics can improve student’s motivation in learning English.
