Abstract

ABSTRACT Dirianti, Olivia. 2019. The Correlation of Motivation, Vocabulary Mastery, and Students’ Writing Skill. Skripsi, English Education Department, Faculty of Languages and Arts Education, IKIP PGRI Bojonegoro. Advisor (I). Dr. M. Ali Ghufron, S,Pd., M.Pd. Advisor (II). Yuniarta Ita Purnama, M.Pd. Key words: motivation, vocabulary, vocabulary mastery, writing, writing skill The objective of this study is knowing whether there is a positive correlation between motivation, and vocabulary mastery, simultaneously and students’ writing skill of the eight graders at SMPN 3 Bojonegoro in the academic year 2018/2019 which is taken only a part of population as the sample by using cluster random sampling, they are class A and D. And the data is taken from former test score for vocabulary mastery and writing skill. While the questionnaire is used to test how high the students’ motivation. The techniques used to analyze the data are simple and multiple correlation, also multiple linear regression. The result of computation using Pearson Product Moment formula shows that the coefficient of correlation r-observation = 0,759 > r-table = 0,208, while Fobservation is 41,78. In order to find out the significance of this value, then it is consulted to F-table for n = 64 and ∝ = 0,05. It is found that F-table = 3,15. This means that F-observation is greater than F-table (41,78 > 3,15). It can be concluded that F-observation is significance. Therefore the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, meaning that the result of the test proved that motivation (X1), vocabulary mastery (X2) simultaneously has a correlation with writing skill (Y). The results of the study show that there is a positive correlation between motivation and vocabulary mastery simultaneously and students’ writing skill. And the correlation is categorized as very strong correlation. This results also give the indicator that teachers should increase the students’ motivation and vocabulary mastery to improve their writing skill.
