Abstract

Mental model leveling is one way to see the extent of student understanding based on the level of each level. In the opinion of experts, it cannot be ruled out that the level of understanding of each student is certainly different, ranging from low, middle, to upper levels and the level of understanding of students themselves can be measured by various things, one of which is mental models. Mental models can be used to determine the level of students' understanding and show students' ways of thinking. The purpose of this study is to describe the six levels of mental models of class VIII students in understanding the concept of straight-line equations. The method used by researchers in this study is a qualitative research method. The subjects of this study were students of class VIII with a total of 121 students, the subjects were taken to fulfill each level of the mental model. Then 2 students were taken to be interviewed as selected subjects who were representatives of each mental model level. So that obtained 12 students as interview subjects. The instruments in this study include test questions and interview guidelines that were previously validated. Procedures for collecting data by observation, tests, interviews, and documentation. Researchers analyzed the data in two ways, namely triangulation of data sources and triangulation of methods to ensure the validity of the data. So that the results obtained that show a description of each level of students' mental models in understanding the concept of straight line equations. Keyword: Leveling, Mental Model, Straight Line
