ABSTRACT Putri, Erika Devia. 2019. The Speech Acts Used In English Debate By The Eleventh Grade Students of SMAN 2 Bojonegoro in The Academic Year of 2018/2019 Skripsi. English Education Department, Faculty of Language and Art Education, IKIP PGRI Bojonegoro. Advisor I: Dr. M. Ali Ghufron, M.Pd, Advisor 2: Yuniarta Ita Purnama, M.Pd. This study was focused at finding out 1) the speech acts used, 2) the styles of politeness used in handling English debate. It was a qualitative research, and the subjects of the study were the eleventh grade students of SMAN 2 in academic year 2018/2019. The research data were collected through simulated English debate. The result showed that the speech acts that were used the most by the debaters were assertive speech acts 45%, followed by directive 30%, and expressive 11%. The speech acts were used frequently by the debaters for handling English debate were assertive speech acts, such as welcoming, apologizing, and thanking. Those kinds of forces were important for the debaters to be uttered to the other debaters to show their pleasures, regrets, and respects. Then, it was followed by assertive speech acts that were used for suggesting, informing and also asking. Directive was used for recommending and asking. There were no any commissives and declarative speech act used by the debaters. Asking can be both, assertive or directive in illocutionary and open-interrogative in locutionary. The politeness styles showed that 99% speech acts were categorized as polite and there were 1% speech acts were categorized as less polite/impolite.
