Abstract

This study aims to determine the role of teachers in building students' critical thinking patterns using group discussions. The background of this research is the teacher's role, one of which is as a motivator in charge of building critical thinking patterns to students. Considering that at this time there are still many students who do not have the courage to think and lack the ability to think critically. So it is necessary for the teacher's efforts to build critical thinking patterns of students at Budi Mulya Kasiman Vocational School in PPKn learning. In this case, PPKn teachers must build critical thinking patterns when discussing groups. This study aims to determine the role of PPKn teachers in building students' critical thinking patterns through group discussions. This study includes a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The research subjects were 1 PPKn teacher at Budi Mulya Kasiman Vocational School, and 4 students in class XI TKJ. The results of the study indicate that the role of the Civics Education teacher is quite appropriate to use in achieving learning that is in accordance with the expectations and learning objectives, because the teacher has carried out his role well. The efforts made by PPKn teachers to build students' critical thinking patterns include raising students' enthusiasm by making learning activities as interesting as possible, and raising students' awareness of the importance of learning activities through group discussion methods. In the efforts of PPKn teachers in building students' critical thinking patterns through group discussions, there are several obstacles in teaching activities including difficulties in understanding the topics or materials given by the teacher, and a less conducive learning atmosphere will make students less concentrated.
