Abstract

This study was motivated by the importance of the use of figurative language in song lyrics as a medium for conveying meanings, emotions, and messages indirectly. The objectives of this study were to identify the types of figurative language found in the song lyrics of SZA's SOS and SOS Deluxe: LANA albums, describe the meanings conveyed through the figurative language, and analyze the similarities and differences in the use of figurative language between the two albums. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method with a comparative approach. The data source consisted of the lyrics of ten purposively selected songs, including five songs from the SOS album and five songs from the SOS Deluxe: LANA album. The data were collected through documentation by identifying, classifying, comparing, and interpreting the figurative language found in the song lyrics. The findings revealed six types of figurative language: metaphor, hyperbole, symbolism, simile, personification, and irony. Metaphor was the most dominant type found in both albums, while irony appeared only in the SOS album. The meanings conveyed through the figurative language were dominated by themes of love, heartbreak, emotional conflict, self-healing, identity, and personal growth. Furthermore, both albums shared similarities in the use of several types of figurative language but differed in the distribution of figurative language types, emotional intensity, and styles of meaning expression. The findings indicate that figurative language plays an important role in enhancing the aesthetic value of song lyrics, expressing emotions, and shaping the distinctive characteristics of the lyrics in both albums.
