Abstract
Istiqomah, Falia. 2026. An Analysis of Code-Switching and Code-Mixing in Agatha Chelsea’s YouTube Video: A Qualitative Descriptive Study. Skripsi, English Education Department, Faculty of Language and Arts Education, IKIP PGRI Bojonegoro. Advisors: (I) Dr. Moh. Fuadul Matin, S.S., M.Pd., (II) Chyntia Heru Woro Prastiwi, M.Pd. This study was motivated by the increasingly common use of two languages in communication among bilingual communities, including in YouTube content. The study aims to identify the types of code-switching and code-mixing found in the conversations between Agatha Chelsea and Azka Corbuzier, as well as the factors that influence their use. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method and used the YouTube video entitled “AZKA CORBUZIER GAK MAU PUNYA BANYAK TEMAN DI KAMPUS?! – SAFE SPACE” as the data source. The researcher collected the data through documentation and analysed the utterances by classifying the types of code-switching and code-mixing and identifying the influencing factors. The findings revealed a total of 170 occurrences, consisting of 101 instances of code-switching and 69 instances of code-mixing. In code-switching, the researcher found 75 occurrences of intra-sentential switching, 18 occurrences of inter-sentential switching, and 8 occurrences of tag switching. Meanwhile, in code-mixing, there were 62 occurrences of insertion, 4 occurrences of alternation, and 3 occurrences of congruent lexicalization. The study also found six factors influencing the use of code-switching and code-mixing, namely talking about a particular topic, expressing group identity, taking the form of an interjection, the intention to clarify speech content, being emphatic about something, and using repetition for clarification. Among these factors, talking about a particular topic was the most dominant factor, occurring 67 times throughout the conversation. These findings indicate that bilingual speakers use code-switching and code-mixing as communication strategies to facilitate interaction and convey meaning effectively.
