Abstract

Oral communication skills are the bridge to literacy because they form the basis for literacy development at the beginning-level. Students cannot write what they cannot say. The need of communication strategies as an instructional intervention for the students with oral disabilities (SOD) to develop their communication skills becomes crucial. The current study aims to describe EFL teacher’s communication strategies in teaching English for the SOD. This study was under qualitative case study which is involving an EFL teacher and 10 SOD as a participant. Interview and observation were used to gain the data. The data analysis technique used is qualitative theme analysis. Then, the result revealed that the teacher employed three kinds of strategies in EFL teaching to the students with oral disabilities. The kinds of strategies are direct, instructional, and indirect strategies. Based on the result of the study, it was recommended to conduct a further research focused on the most frequent strategy used by EFL teacher for the students with oral disabilities.
