Abstract

ABSTRACT Agus Miftah Farid, M. 2019. “Learning Strategies Used By Fluent Pre-service English Teachers in Speaking Skill ( A Case Study at First Grade of English Education Department at A Private University in East Java in Academic Year 2018/2019)”. English Department Faculty of Language and Art Education IKIP PGRI Bojonegoro. Advisor (1) Refi Ranto Rozak, M.Pd. Advisor (2) Siti Ermawati, S. Pd.I., M.Pd.I. . The purposes in doing this research were to know kinds of learning strategies used by fluent pre-srvice English teachers and to investigate the strategies Implemented by fluent pre-service English teachers. This research uses qualitative case study method. The research was conducted in the first grade of English Education Department at a Private University in East Java started from 25th of March to 10th of July 2019. The sources of data were events, documents and informans. The data were collected through observation, purposive sampling, interviews, questionnaires, and document analysis. The fluent pre-service English Teachers were observed and noted. The data were analyzed using interactive model of qualitative data analysis technique, which includes data collection, data reduction, data display and drawing conclusion. Based on the observation, interviews, questionnaires, and documents analysis, it can be concluded that: (1) English learning strategies used by most of the fluent pre-service English teachers at an English Education Department in East Java in academic year 2018/2019, they all had similarities in using learning strategies, one of them used only memory strategy but others used memory and cognitive strategies. Even thought they only used some of the strategies, but it was able to cover their speaking skill. (2) The implementation of the fluent pre-service English teachers at an English Education Department in East Java in academic year 2018/2019, MAP and AR had a similar strategy to improve their speaking skill. They used watching as their strategy. Meanwhile KN and NS had a similar strategy to improve their speaking skill. They used listening music as their strategy. Both of the strategies could make them enjoy their learning strategies. Because they could learn English by themselves, without thinking about the duration. They did it as they wanted. Learning strategy is a good activity for the learners. The awareness of the benefits of learning strategies is important because is stimulates the students to use learning strategies. Learning strategy is viewed beneficial and helpful for students’ English learning. Learning strategies are considered as one of important factors determining the success of foreign language learning. Thus, in learning English, the learners should be aware, find and use the most appropriate learning strategies so they can be successful in their learning.
