Abstract

Abstrak : This study to describe the students' number sense abilities in terms of cognitive style; object imagery, spatial imagery, and verbal. This research was conducted at SMPN 1 Sumberrejo. The subjects of this study were students of class IX at SMP Negeri 1 Sumberrejo. The data analysis used the test method, and the interview method. Based on the results of the study, it was obtained: 1) Number Sense analysis of students with object imagery cognitive style in the exponential number material showed that students with object imagery cognitive style had sufficient understanding of the components of number concept and multiple representations, but weak for components of measurement benchmarks, effect of operations, equivalent expressions and computing and counting strategies. 2) Number Sense analysis of students with spatial imagery cognitive style on exponential number material shows that students with spatial imagery cognitive style have a better number sense ability than students with other cognitive styles, this is proven by doing tests and interviews whose answers are short and simple without being fixated on calculations on paper and understanding the components of number sense, namely number concept, multiple representations, effect of operations, equivalent expressions and computing and counting strategies, although they are less precise in measurement benchmarks. Students with spatial imagery cognitive style also seem to be able to do mental calculations well. 3) Number Sense analysis of students with verbal cognitive style on the rank number material shows that students with verbal cognitive style are able to understand the components of number concept, multiple representations, effect of operations, and equivalent expressions, but in measurement benchmarks and computing and counting strategies still have difficulties.
