Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine how the ability to think critically in solving system problems of one-variable linear equations in terms of students' cognitive styles. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The subjects of this study were seventh grade students of SMP PANCASILA DANDER even semester of the 2019/2020 school year. The instruments in this study were observations, cognitive style questionnaires, critical thinking skills tests, and interviews with students and teachers. Data collection in this study was carried out by using triangulation techniques which were carried out when the researcher analyzed students' critical thinking skills. The data validity technique used in this study was the triangulation of sources and methods. The results of the discussion can be concluded that students with the Field Independent (FI) cognitive style have good critical thinking skills in solving problems because the subject of this style is able to fulfill 4 steps of Problem Solving Polya, while students with the Field Dependent (FD) cognitive style only fulfill 2 problem steps. Solving Polya by only planning the completion and implementing the plan without understanding the problems that occur. Because they are more concerned with planning and implementing it without checking the answers that have been done. From these 2 cognitive styles it can be seen that students who have a Field Independent (FI) cognitive style are superior to students with a Field Dependent (FD) cognitive style.
