Abstract

Abstract Understanding is the process of individuals in receiving and understanding information obtained from learning obtained through attention. In the learning process, the elements of understanding can’t be separated from other psychological elements, one of which is related to the level of mental models. The mental model level is the ability that has been achieved by students with a variety of assumptions, strategies, perspectives, and rationale that are always used and have deep roots in various actions. The purpose of this study to describe the six levels of students' mental models in understanding the concept of SPLDV story questions for junior high school students. The method used in this study is a qualitative research method. Subjects in this study were 16 students who were students of class VIII A. The sixteen subjects were given test questions, then 2 students from each mental model were selected as representatives who met the criteria for interviewing. So there are 12 students who become interview respondents. To validate the data, researchers analyzed data in two ways, the triangulation of data sources and triangulation of methods. The results showed description of each level of students mental models in understanding the concept of a two-variable linear equation system problem.
