Abstract

Khafidhoh, Alfi. N. 2023 Psychoanalysis of the Main Character in the Little Women Movie. Thesis, English Education Study Program, Faculty of Language and Art Education, IKIP PGRI BOJONEGORO, Supervisor (1) Dr. Ima Isnaini Taufiqur Rohmah., S.Pd.,M. Pd. (II) Dr. M. Zainudin, S.Pd., M.Pd. Keywords : Psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, Carl Gustav Jung, Little Women. Psychoanalysis is a theory that discusses the nature and development of human personality. The purpose of this research is to find out how the id, ego, and superego of the main character of Little Women’s movie. In this research, the researcher used qualitative descriptive method. This research used a psychological approach, to be exact personality structure theory by Sigmund Freud and Carl Gustav Jung. The data was collected through observation and documentation. The object of this research was Little Women's movie. The data analysis was employed based on the procedure of data suggested by Miles and Huberman which consisted of step data condensation, display, and verification data. Based Sigmund Freud theory, the fifteen data found in the Little Women movie by Sigmund Freud theory, there are three data of id, nine data of ego, and three data of superego. The ego is the most personality appearing in the main character of Little Women movie. Based on the result of this research, the researcher found that the id of Jo is portrayed through negative thoughts and temperament. The ego is represented through how she can be realistic when there are so many problems in her life. And the superego is portrayed through her guilty thought. In psychoanalytic theory according to Carl Gustav Jung, the researcher found seventeen data related to conscious (2 data), personal unconscious (1 datum), and six archetypes that appeared, those are shadows (2 data), persona (2 data), self (4 data), great mother (3 data), the hero (1 datum), and animus (2 data). Jo’s conscious is in the form of perceptions that she has big responsibility for her family. Jo’s personal unconscious turned into a bitter experience that was suppressed and mechanically self-inflicted. Jo's shadow is the dark side of Jo, who doesn't want to be criticized and can be a temperamental person. Jo's persona is that she succeeds in impressing those around her with her presence. Self in Jo is represented that Jo has a tendency to progress and grow. The great mother archetype in Jo represents that she is a protector for her sisters. Jo's hero is a struggle that she does for her family. Meanwhile, the animus in Jo is illustrated when she argues logically and rationally.
