Keyword: Communication Styles, Gender Communication, Speaking Ability The variation in communication styles used by male and female do not occur without any reason, the original characters of both genders are affected the way they communicate. It happened due to the habits that both genders carried when they communicate. Knowing the style of communication is the first step to achieve the effectiveness in communication and having a good speaking ability is the sign of effective communication This research aimed to know the communication styles used by male and female undergraduate student and to figure out the relation of communication styles used by male and female undergraduate students in affecting their communication ability in public speaking course. Based on the aim above, the researcher identified 2 research problems: 1). How are the communication styles used by male and female undergraduate students of English education department?, 2. How are the relation between the communication styles used by male and female undergraduate students of English education department and their speaking ability in public speaking course? The researcher developed case-study research using qualitative method to get the research. Interview, questionnaire and test used to collect the data in this research. The research participants are the second years students of English Education Department of IKIP PGRI Bojonegoro years 2023/2024. The results of questionnaire and interview shows that there are 5 students of male undergraduate students that use assertive communication style and 4 male undergraduate students use passive communication style, while only 1 male undergraduate student use aggressive communication style. On the other hand, there are 5 female undergraduate students that used passive-aggressive communication style. 3 female undergraduate students used assertive communication style and 2 students of female undergraduate students use passive communication style. Male undergraduate students mostly used assertive communication style while female undergraduate students mostly used passive-aggressive communication style. On the other hand, the undergraduate students that used assertive communication style tend to have a good speaking ability in public speaking course rather than the undergraduate students that used passive-aggressive, passive or aggressive communication style.
