Similarly, McDonough (2003) stated that reading is the most important foreign language skill, particularly in cases where students have to read English for their own specialist subject. The purpose of this study was to know skimming and scanning strategies is effective to improve students’ reading comprehension and to know the significant difference of skimming and scanning strategy on students’ reading comprehension. The method used experimental study. By using quantitative research, in this study, the students’ achievement in reading comprehension was measured by using tests, namely try out test, pre-test and post-test. Both, pre-test and post-test were consisted of each 37 items which in the multiple choice form. The findings describe that skimming and scanning strategies applied in teaching learning process, the writer measures the effectiveness of skimming and scanning strategies of the second grade at Mts Thoriqotul Falah Talangkembar, which the sample was consisting of 27 students experimental class and 25 students are control class. The result was t-table is 2,06, t-count is 21,837. Significance is 0,729 with sig (2-tailed) 0,60. It means that the t-count is bigger than t-table and significance is bigger than 0,05. It can conclude that skimming and scanning strategies is effective enough to be used in improving students’ reading comprehension, and there is a significant difference of the students who taught by using skimming and scanning strategies. Using skimming and scanning strategies in improving students’ reading comprehension is recommended and motivation in learning English for the English teacher and student.
