Abstract

Gymnastiar, Abdulloh. 2025. An Analysis Of Students Confidence Level In Public Speaking Through Group Discussion Learning Strategy. Skripsi, English Education Department, Faculty of Language and Arts Education, IKIP PGRI Bojonegoro, Advisors: (I) Meiga Ratih Tirtanawati, M.Pd., (II) Chyntia Heru Woro Prastiwi, M.Pd. Keywords: Confidence, Public Speaking, Group Discussion, Anxiety, Self-Efficacy This study aims to analyze the confidence level of Grade 11 students at Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 2 Bojonegoro in English public speaking through the implementation of a group discussion learning strategy. The research is grounded in factors affecting public speaking confidence, including anxiety, self-efficacy, audience response, and training and practice. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The results show varied levels of confidence among students: those with low confidence experience high anxiety and fear of judgment; students with moderate confidence often hesitate to start discussions due to limited self-efficacy and unfamiliarity with structured speaking tasks; while those with high confidence tend to dominate discussions, limiting opportunities for others. Group discussion provides a collaborative environment that can either support or hinder the development of speaking confidence, depending on structure and guidance. The findings emphasize the importance of proper training, role distribution, and continuous practice in reducing anxiety and improving self-efficacy. The study suggests that with consistent teacher facilitation, group discussions can significantly enhance students’ confidence in English public speaking.
