Abstract

Ristiana, Ria. The Correlation of the Grammar Mastery and the Translation Competence in Narrative Text. Skripsi, English Education Department, Faculty of Language and Arts Education, IKIP PGRI Bojonegoro, Advisor (I)Chyntia Heru Woro Prastiwi, M. Pd, (II) Dr. Fuadul Matin, S.S., M.Pd. This study examines the relationship between students' grammar mastery and their translation competence, with particular emphasis on the translation of narrative texts. In the Indonesian context, where English is learned as a foreign language, many students continue to depend on literal, word-for-word translation strategies. As a result, they frequently produce grammatical inaccuracies and misinterpret the intended meaning because of the structural differences between Indonesian and English. This research adopted a quantitative correlational design to analyze the relationship between grammar mastery (Variable X) and translation competence (Variable Y). The study was conducted exclusively at MAN 2 Bojonegoro and involved 21 twelfth-grade students from the Language Program (Kelas Bahasa) as the research sample. Data were obtained through two assessment instruments, namely a multiple-choice grammar mastery test and a narrative text translation test. The results of the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation analysis showed that the obtained correlation coefficient (r-count) was 0.479, exceeding the critical value of the r-table (0.433) at a significance level of α = 0.05. This result indicates a moderate positive correlation between the two variables. The findings suggest that grammar mastery contributes significantly to the quality and accuracy of students' translations. Therefore, English teachers are encouraged to strengthen students' grammatical awareness during translation activities to minimize literal translation errors and enhance their overall translation competence.
