Abstract

Abstract This study aims to describe speech acts in the novel Orang-Orang Biasa by Andrea Hirata. There are 3 type of speech acts in the Oang-Orang Biasa, namely locus, illocutionary, and perlocutionary speech acts. This research used desciptive approach. Sources of data obtained from the novel Orang-Orang Biasa. The novel used is the first print and published by Bentang Yogyakarta in February 2019. Data collection techniques were carried out using library reseach and documentation while data analysis techniques used qualitative techniques with 3 stages starting from 1) data reduction, 2) presentation of data, 3) conclusion and verification. The results of the study can be concluded that 1) locus speech acts contained 39 utterances which stated something that could be words, phrases, or sentences themsel ves that are meaningful and can be understood directly, 2) illocutionary speech acts contained 40 utterance that shows the assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declaration functions, 3) perlocutionary speech acts contained 18 utterances whose utterance is intended to influence the speech partner or interlocutor who is done intentionally or unintentionally.
